Verification of all certification Applications may take up to 45 days.
While training is required, taking the certification training from QEITF is optional. The certification assessment exam is developed independently from the preparation course offered by QEITF. The QEITF Certification Council does not recommend or endorse any specific course. Current Inspectors, in order to avoid having to re-take the QEITF assessment exam, you must successfully complete the Online maintenance of qualification renewal application and renewal exam along with the additional required CEUs, prior to the expiration date of your current QEI certification credentials.

What is the process to become a CEI through QEITF?
- Fill out the “Inspector Training Course and Exam Package” on the certification portal.
- You will receive an email when your application is approved.
- Call the office to register for the class that fits with your schedule. We keep approved applications on file for 12 months from the application date.
What are the fees associated with QEITF Certification Course and Exam?
Inspector Training Course and Certification Exam fees are:
- $999.00: member (not in benefit “self-pay”) / retiree in good standing, Or employees of employers signatory to the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the IUEC.
- $2,500.00: all others.
There is a $25 application fee that you will pay when you submit your application. It will be deducted from the price of the course when you register.
How do I get the required code books?
When you register for a class, you will receive the current code book list. You will need to order and pay for the books. Prices vary, but you can expect to spend around $1500.
How do I apply for QEITF INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION and where are the applications found?
There are three options available to apply for Inspector Certification and for maintaining your qualifications:
Online application (preferred):
- Create an account on the Certification Portal.
- Then choose your option from the list of applications: Inspector Training Course and Exam Package, Certification Exam Only, or Training Course Only.
- Fill in all the areas marked with a red dot.
- Detailed instructions, including screenshots, are available HERE.
Paper applications are available here. Select the type of application you want, open it, print it and fill it out. A $25 registration fee is required. It will be deducted from the price of the course when you register.
Mail the completed application and registration fee payment to the QEITF office, attention Vivienne Fritz.
You can also request an application be mailed to you by calling 1-888-511-3113 ext. 4 between 8:00 AM and 5:00PM EST.
If at all possible, we prefer you use the online application.
What is the structure of the QEITF Inspector Certification Training Course and Exam?
QEITF offers a 4-day Inspector Training Course that provides instruction on the use of current relevant elevator codes and standards.
The course is held Monday- Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm local time. The test is held on Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm local time.
What are the requirements for participation in the QEITF Certification Course?

Before taking the exam candidates for CEI certification must meet all eligibility requirements in effect at the time of their application for certification.
- High school or GED diploma;
- Five (5) years of supervised experience in the elevator trade (includes an 8000-hour national apprenticeship program and 1-year of post-apprenticeship experience);
- Passing score on the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP) Mechanics Exam or an equivalent

Can I take the Certification Course and Exam online?
We do not offer an online option. All our courses and exams are taught and proctored in person.
What is the QEITF?
QEITF is the Qualified Elevator Inspector Training Fund.
Is QEITF an accredited Certifying Organization?
Yes. QEITF was granted accreditation under ISO/IEC 17024: 2012 by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), to certify Qualified Elevator Inspectors (QEI) to the ASME QEI-1 Standard for the Qualification of Elevator Inspectors on December 27, 2013. I am already QEI certified by an ANAB accredited organization. Can I transfer my certification to QEITF?
Individuals who are currently certified in good standing as elevator inspectors or elevator inspector supervisors and who have successfully completed an examination and earned certification under the QEI-1 Standard offered by an ANAB 17024-accredited certification program may apply for the corresponding QEITF certification.
These individuals must meet the following additional eligibility requirements:
- Five (5) years of supervised experience in the elevator trade;
- Mechanic certificate issued by the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP) or equivalent;
- Code of Conduct/Ethics attestation;
- Passing score on the QEITF QEI-1 assessment.
These individuals must meet all the QEITF maintenance of certification requirements. The certification cycle for maintenance of certification will begin on the day the individual’s application is approved.
